The importance of building a swipe file

As you develop your business and your own brand you will be producing bespoke products to pass on to your subscribers, these could be ‘giveaways’ or even sales items. You might supply ebooks, video courses or packages of articles. All of these items need to be promoted effectively.

The common link between all these things is good well constructed sales copy.

We have all received very professional well written compelling sales letters; many of us will have felt that we could never produce such things ourselves. So here is a secret that even the very best and most experienced copy writers are never without. A Swipe File….

What is a swipe file?

Actually a swipe file is nothing complicated. How many times do you go to pick up your mail from the door mat or the post box and find a heap of marketing material? What do you normally do with it? Most people throw it in the bin, after a cursory glance, a few will read it through and keep it if it interests them. Here is the secret; you should keep all of it, read it, punch 2 holes in it and save it in a folder clearly marked Swipe File. Regularly you should open this file and read through some of the contents. This is your research material, by reading it carefully you will start to educate yourself in how, or maybe sometimes how not to, create good sales copy.

What will you do tomorrow when the postman calls? Will you save it and read it, or will you just bin it like you used to?

So this is what a swipe file is; packed with ideas and inspiration you can ‘Swipe’ for use for your own copy.

Getting the job started – how procrastination can steal your dreams

The first hurdle

The vast majority of would be internet marketers fall at the first hurdle. They start out with a surge of unbridled enthusiasm for the project ahead. They embark on their research with a zest that was absent in all those years at school. They then sit in front of their computer with fingers poised above the keyboard ready to get that blog site online and write their first inspired article.

What happens next is the sudden realisation of the task they have set them selves; this is where the dreaded procrastination sets in, and their dreams of success can quickly fade.

I know how you feel

Now you can see that my description of this scenario clearly shows my own knowledge and experience of this potentially devastating challenge. Yes I have been there; yes I still suffer from writers block and from lack of an idea to write about. It happens to us all and it will always plague us if we let it.
So having felt this way my self I have found that a few simple methods can make all the difference.

Make out a list of all that needs to be done, focus on the first 5-6 things and get them down on paper. Think through carefully and note down the actions required to complete each of these tasks. Realise for your self the cost of your procrastination and the effect that failure would have on you.

Now take each task in order and work through it from start to finish, do not jump from one thing to another; practice being organized and methodical. If you start to move off subject, or feel procrastination taking a hold again, try setting a time limit to how long you spend each day on the project; even 15 minutes a day will see a job completed eventually.

All these things will help you to become disciplined in what ever you are doing and you will start to achieve results.

I know you can do it

A final point to remember is this; whilst ‘procrastination is the thief of time’, ‘perfection is idealistic unreality’. You must aim for your best, but if your try to be perfect you will never actually start. ‘Practice makes perfect (or pretty close to it)’, so just start and soon you will surprise yourself. I know you can do it, Go For It.

Your Blog, Your Subject

Many a would be blogger is stumped when it comes to thinking of a subject to write about; blogs should generally follow a focus. Your reader is subscribing to your blog because they believe that you can solve one of their problems and or help them succeed. Blogs with out focus loose readership very quickly, remember your aim is to develop your brand and a relationship of value and trust with your subscriber list.

Generally people are modest by nature and struggle when it comes to perceiving themselves as an authority or even knowledgeable on any subject. This situation can often be overcome by writing down a list of things that you have experience of. Then pick each one and jot down some notes covering how you have become involved in each, this will start to show up the subjects in which you have the most knowledge and interest.

Once you have isolated 2 or 3 ideas you can start to research for factual information; Google is always a great place to start on any subject. Take some notes and work out some headings for several posts.

Visit article sites like ezinearticles and look for articles covering your chosen subjects, you can also buy ‘packages’ of articles. You are then able to use these as a template to create your own; it is not a good idea to simply copy articles word for word, for blog postings you should generally create a unique title and re-write the content by at least 25-50%

This being said; there are odd occasions when it is pertinent to simply post an article as originally written, in these instances you must always place an acknowledgement and lick back to the article you have copied.

Often you will come up with a theme on which you are going to write, this may well lead to a series of articles which can be posted at intervals. Wordpress allows us to schedule posts to automatically publish at chosen time/date in the future. This means that you can place several posts on your blog when you are in writing mode and have them appear over a period of time.

Ultimately you can develop several blogs on different subjects, on which you can carefully promote your opportunities and products; this can provide you with a much bigger total audience.

I look forward to reading your blog posts and articles.
